Radio Head

Chiropractic, Dr. Sheffield, Golf Fitness, Performance Mar 02, 2011 No Comments

It was such a great experience being on the radio with Stephen “the athlete with a law degree” Foster on the local ESPN station here in Austin, Texas. He is such a great guy- lots of fun and an excellent radio host. He really put me at ease.

One of the things that I love about Steve is that I’ve converted him to a chiropractic fan. (Yesssss!) He was skeptical, as many are, but I understand that because fifteen years ago I was a skeptic myself. I started my healthcare career as a pharmacist in the medical model, but got such great results with chiropractic that I decided to change careers. People who are anti-chiropractic simply haven’t experienced the benefits of it. Yet.

After adjusting Steve, he not only felt better, but he told me he ran faster, played better golf (drove the green on a 300+ yard hole), and hit the ball out of the park playing softball! Working on the Foss is fun because he’s already so incredibly fit. Taking his nervous system to the next level is like giving a BMW a tune-up. You don’t have to be broken to experience the benefits of chiropractic.

Here’s the link to the radio segment. Sheffield 2-27-11 I’ll be on again this Sunday 3-6-11 at 10:45 am CST. We did the TPI golf evaluation today, so that will be our next topic. Check it out. Feel free to forward this info by opening the blog archive for March (on the right) and at the bottom there will be Facebook and Twitter links to share.

I’ll keep you posted on his status. Don’t worry- he gave me permission to share the information. I’m not violating any HIPPA laws ☺.

What the Heck is Golf Fitness?

Golf Fitness Feb 25, 2011 No Comments

Every now and then a person arrives on the scene who functions at an entirely new level and pushes the envelope of human performance and endurance. Lance Armstrong rode his bike to an unheard of seven victories for the Tour de France.  Usain Bolt is the fastest runner on the planet, consistently making competitors look slow.  Tiger Woods changed the game of golf with uncanny distance and accuracy in all phases of the game.  One of the critical elements that set high-performers such as these apart is physical fitness, and an important part of physical fitness is chiropractic care.

I would estimate that in excess of 90% of all world-class athletes use Chiropractic care to prevent injuries and to increase their performance potential.

Physical fitness is the measure of the body’s ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and in leisure. It is the body’s innate ability to resist hypokinetic disease, to adapt and heal itself when stressed or injured. Chiropractic is a health care system that improves body function and eliminates pain by removing vertebral misalignments. These misalignments irritate and decrease nerve transmission from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body.

One aspect that Tiger brought to the game of golf is an incredible degree of physical fitness.  His ability to use his body efficiently and effectively set new benchmarks. Tiger’s natural physique and his commitment to golf fitness have made him the most revered golfer in the world.

So what is golf fitness?

Golf fitness identifies and improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the body’s ability to move through every aspect of the golf swing.  Titleist Performance Institute has created a comprehensive physical evaluation to identify physical limitations that affect a person’s golf swing.  For example, the ability to rotate the upper body (torso) independently from the lower body (pelvis) is crucial for transferring energy throughout the golf swing. Training, conditioning and chiropractic care work together to identify and overcome a physical limitation such as this.

…Lifting weights and seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis has made me a better golfer. I’ve been going to Chiropractors for as long as I can remember. It’s as important to my training as practicing my swing.

Golf fitness is critical for preventing injuries (resisting hypokinetic disease). A highly trained and functioning body is much more resistant to injury than one that is out of alignment and unable to move properly.  Interestingly, the top two causes of low back pain in golfers are poor posture and lack of normal motion in the spine.  Chiropractic can correct these, and other issues that affect you game.

As a certified Titleist Performance Institute Golf Fitness Professional I would love to help take your game to the next level.  Now is the time to get ready for the spring golf season, and I have a 25% off special through the month of March for the eleven point TPI Golf Evaluation and diagnostic exam.  Call 512-306-1625 today to book your appointment.

Treat your liver and gut to a vacation!

Functional Medicine, Health and Wellness Jan 07, 2011 No Comments

Have you ever had a boss who was a taskmaster, a slave driver, and a demanding soul who cared only about production?  Overtime, anytime, all the time, boundaries pushed, exhaustion sets in. You aren’t efficient anymore, you’re chronically tired, and the joy of living fades to gray.

Chances are high that your liver and GI tract are exhausted after the holidays.  The food, the wine, the dessert(s!), more food, more wine, leftovers (it’s always better the next day, isn’t it?), mimosas, more leftovers, and then it’s off to Aunt Jenny’s house to start all over again – for the fourth time.  Ugh.

Remember how you wished that your boss would appreciate your hard work and your value to the company? Just a little time off and you could be twice as productive. Well, your liver and GI tract would like some understanding as well! They have been working overtime and they need a vacation!

Your liver is the critical workhorse for metabolism and detoxification. Between food, alcohol, medications, supplements and energy production, it has a very long to-do list that is never ending. Your GI tract is a core component to your immune function. Most of us don’t think about how much our GI tract and what we eat influences our body’s natural ability to heal itself and fight off bacteria, viruses and cancer cells.  It’s critical!

Come and find out how to give your liver and GI tract the vacation it deserves! I will go over many great “vacation” packages, offering a 9, 14 or 21 day cleanse options to fit your season of life and get you results!

Look and feel betterPC251391.

Increase your energy levels.

And lose weight.

Best of all, your liver and gut will be smiling (they like to go on vacation together) after their wonderful “spa vacation”. They will feel valued and be so happy that your body will definitely become a “fat burning machine”.

Steal The Thunder From Your Cold Sores

Functional Medicine Nov 23, 2010 No Comments

Cold sores are nasty little viruses.  Different triggers, such as stress, sunlight, or an overwhelmed immune system can activate the virus and cause an unsightly bump on the lips.

There are many natural remedies suggested for cold sores, but generally they are ineffective.  L-Lysine is a popular remedy used to prevent cold sores, however, I don’t consider taking large amounts of a single amino acid particularly natural or safe. The amino acids we ingest are incorporated into our DNA.  Who knows how long it would take to see genetic coding changes because you overloaded your system with a single amino acid? Furthermore L-Lysine, while considered non-toxic, isn’t without side effects.  At high doses side effects can include elevated cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, and nausea. There is one report of kidney failure.

For cold sores the safest and most effective solution is actually an over-the-counter product called Abreva.  Abreva is cool because it’s a topical cream that simply prevents the virus from entering the cell.  It’s sort of like having an umbrella on a rainy day.  The most important thing about Abreva is to use it when you first notice the tingle that precedes the bump because that’s the thunder that tells you it’s about to rain. If you wait too long, you won’t get good results. I consider Abreva a much better choice than L-Lysine, it’s equally effective as prescription anti-virals, and it’s as safe as they come.

As always, keep your body in tip-top shape by drinking lots of water, eating your veggies, exercising, and getting regular chiropractic care.

The Best of What’s Around

Dr. Sheffield Nov 08, 2010 No Comments

I love being a Chiropractor and I love being a Pharmacist. So often people see these two mindsets as an unreconcilable contradiction: an East vs. West, winner-takes-all tussle for the one-and-only right way. Unfortunately, lots of doctors and practitioners from the two different worlds fuel those fires and the biggest loser is you, the patient.

I believe there is a better way, a third way – a synthesis. As a Dave Matthews fan I like to call this synthesis the best of what’s around.

Your health and wellness is what matters to me, period. Artificial categories such as ‘natural’ and ‘drug’ only tend to confuse the issue. Natural does not always mean safe and drug does not always mean effective. I want to remove these labels, set the record straight, and with an unbiased opinion create a new paradigm focused on a healthy, happy you.

So send me your questions and I’ll give it to you straight-up, and tell you about the best of what’s around.

Love What You Do

Dr. Sheffield Sep 20, 2010 No Comments

Have you ever considered the things that give you energy and make you happy inside? The list is diverse as the people in your life… listening to music, gardening, riding motorcycles, work, golf, cooking…so many things. I have a friend who is happiest when she’s dissecting a spreadsheet. I go cross-eyed over spreadsheets, but to my friend, they are a joy. Wow. Whenever you see someone doing something they love, it just brings a certain level of joy and satisfaction, doesn’t it? It’s fun to watch. Something inside just resonates… life is supposed to be that way.

Figuring out what you love and incorporating it into your life brings beauty and fulfillment. Work or play, the more you do what you love, the more beauty and joy you’ll live with.

I love helping people with their health. I get energy and joy from it. I’m passionate about it. It just makes me happy. It’s the reason I became a pharmacist twenty years ago, and it’s the reason I decided to become a chiropractor. Your health is a gift, and one that you want to cultivate, nuture and maintain, so that you can do all the things you love for a very long time.

I’d love to help you ~

Katerina
