Get Your Teeth Cleaned, Get Your Spine Checked

Chiropractic, Dr. Sheffield, Full Spine and Extremity Chiropractic, Health and Wellness, Upper Cervical Chiropractic Oct 07, 2013 No Comments

Dr. Sheffield has a prediction, “Spinal health will soon be viewed much in the same way that dental health is viewed,” she forecasts.  “Poor spinal care is often tolerated in the same way that poor dental hygiene was once tolerated.  Thankfully that’s changing as people learn how good spinal care positively impacts overall health.  Over 90% of professional athletes utilize chiropractic care because they understand how chiropractic care improves the body’s ability to move and function.  Soon we’ll value good posture and good spinal health in much the same way we value straight, white teeth.”

Everyone understands that cavities and missing teeth are a sign of significant dental problems, but not everyone understands that poor posture is a sign of significant spinal problems.  To avoid dental problems people brush and floss, and see their dentist regularly.  It’s much better to take a proactive, preventative-maintenance approach than it is to have cavities filled, root canals performed or dentures made.   In the same way seeing your chiropractor regularly is the preventative-maintenance approach to avoid accelerated aging, decreased mobility and pain.  In addition to seeing your chiropractor on a regular basis, a good daily stretching and exercise regimen will help keep your spine and your body strong, limber and healthy.

Put On Your Sunglasses and Enjoy the Show

Functional Medicine, Health and Wellness Oct 24, 2012 No Comments

Let’s face it: nuclear bombs are useful.  If you need to eradicate an enemy nothing gets the job done faster.  When nuclear bombs were first invented though, we didn’t completely understand the side effects of radiation because there wasn’t enough data to show that it was harmful.  So early on, when our military was testing nuclear bombs, you might have been lucky enough to get invited out to watch.  They’d give you a pair of cool sunglasses, say ‘you might want to hold your ears,’ and BAM!  What a light show.

Pesticides are useful too.  They’re kind of the nuclear bombs of the bug world.  If a farm needs to eradicate an enemy so they can vastly increase their yield, nothing gets the job done faster.  The perfectly polished and spotless produce they grow puts on a heck of a show, and you don’t even need sunglasses (you might want to wash it with a little chlorinated tap water though.)  And even though pesticides are potent neurotoxins, and even though studies consistently show a strong correlation between lower birth rates and higher rates of learning disorders, and even though many pesticides have been banned, the American Academy of Pediatrics recently issued a report saying that there isn’t enough data to show that eating organic is healthier. Really.
So enjoy the show – it really is pretty.  But personally, I’ll skip the slow poisoning. I encourage you to do the same.

Have you taken an antibiotic recently? If so, make sure and replenish your gut by eating yogurt and/or taking a probiotic! Antibiotics kill bacteria indiscriminately, and your gut needs a varied and healthy set of bacteria to function. A recent study found that older adults with the most varied gut bacteria were healthier than those with only a few kinds of bacteria. Want to increase the variety of bacteria in your gut? It’s simple: don’t eat the same thing everyday.

Dr. Sheffield of Westlake Chiropractic is an expert in Functional Medicine and can design a regimen for you to achieve optimum gut health.

Nature’s Antibiotics

Chiropractic, Dr. Sheffield, Health and Wellness Jun 12, 2012 No Comments

Fluroquinolone antibiotics such as Cipro are associated with an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture and can cause severe pain, and permanent disability.  The FDA has issued the strongest warning required for a drug – a box warning.  In younger patients side effect injuries may appear as ‘sports injuries’ while in older patients they may appear as inexplicable tendon ruptures.  Fluroquinolone antibiotics are powerful drugs that are among the most over-prescribed drugs on the market.  They should be used only when natural means have been exhausted, and discontinued immediately and permanently with any joint pain or injury.

Before resorting to prescription antibiotics why not try what nature has to offer?  There are many natural substances with excellent antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, including colloidal silver, garlic, echinacea, pau d’arco and manuka honey.  At Westlake Chiropractic we recommend nature’s remedy first, and we’re here to bring health and healing to you today!

Ginger and Brain Function

Health and Wellness Mar 20, 2012 No Comments

In a study published earlier this year, researchers have found that ginger (Zingiber officinale) supports memory and cognitive function in middle-aged women. Ginger is a botanical used historically to enhance gastrointestinal health and balance inflammatory processes.

Sixty healthy women received either a placebo or a ginger standardized extract of 400 mg or 800 mg daily for two months. The researchers assessed the women for cognitive function and memory at the beginning of the study and again after one and two months of supplementation.

The subjects receiving the ginger supplement had enhanced performance on the tests for working memory and cognitive function compared to the placebo group.

The researchers concluded that ginger is an effective cognitive enhancer for middle-aged women.

Another study published in 2011 found that exercise also supports cognitive function and memory. In this study, middle-aged men and women performed either aerobic exercise or stretching and coordination exercise twice weekly for six months. Both exercise groups, and particularly the stretching and coordination exercise group, showed enhanced performance on memory tests.

Getting аn occasional headache іѕ а normal part оf living, but ѕоmе people experience headaches оn а regular basis. The mоѕt common types оf headaches are:

Tension Headaches: Our modern world hаѕ caused аn increased amount оf stress, аnd thіѕ stress саn result іn thе tightening оf muscles thrоughоut thе body. Tense muscles оftеn lead tо imbalances wіthіn thе body, which іn turn саn саuѕе additional pain аnd discomfort.

Wіth tension related conditions, а chiropractor wіll adjust thе spine іn order tо relax thе muscles аnd hеlр release thе pressure оff thе nerve, which іn turn mау hеlр tо decrease thе headaches. A chiropractor wіll uѕuаllу bеgіn thе process bу аѕkіng questions аbоut уоur lifestyle, family history, аnd medical history.

As an upper cervical chiropractor I have had excellent results treating patients with chronic headaches and migraines.

Treat your liver and gut to a vacation!

Functional Medicine, Health and Wellness Jan 07, 2011 No Comments

Have you ever had a boss who was a taskmaster, a slave driver, and a demanding soul who cared only about production?  Overtime, anytime, all the time, boundaries pushed, exhaustion sets in. You aren’t efficient anymore, you’re chronically tired, and the joy of living fades to gray.

Chances are high that your liver and GI tract are exhausted after the holidays.  The food, the wine, the dessert(s!), more food, more wine, leftovers (it’s always better the next day, isn’t it?), mimosas, more leftovers, and then it’s off to Aunt Jenny’s house to start all over again – for the fourth time.  Ugh.

Remember how you wished that your boss would appreciate your hard work and your value to the company? Just a little time off and you could be twice as productive. Well, your liver and GI tract would like some understanding as well! They have been working overtime and they need a vacation!

Your liver is the critical workhorse for metabolism and detoxification. Between food, alcohol, medications, supplements and energy production, it has a very long to-do list that is never ending. Your GI tract is a core component to your immune function. Most of us don’t think about how much our GI tract and what we eat influences our body’s natural ability to heal itself and fight off bacteria, viruses and cancer cells.  It’s critical!

Come and find out how to give your liver and GI tract the vacation it deserves! I will go over many great “vacation” packages, offering a 9, 14 or 21 day cleanse options to fit your season of life and get you results!

Look and feel betterPC251391.
