    What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a conservative, natural, holistic and rational form of healthcare focused on optimizing and improving the quality of life. A chiropractic adjustment corrects misalignments within the spine and restores function to a spinal joint that isn’t moving correctly or is “fixated”. The spinal cord is housed inside the vertebral bones so it’s impossible to physiologically separate the mechanical and neurological components of a spinal fixation. In other words, vertebral misalignments affect nerve function.

Correction of spinal misalignments reduces pain and inflammation, muscle spasm, tension, and normalizes spinal biomechanics. More importantly, it can remove nerve irritation and interference, which can improve overall health and wellness.

How does chiropractic affect overall health and wellness and other aspects of health beyond back and neck pain?

Explaining how a spinal misalignment affects the body beyond muscles and joints and ultimately how a chiropractic adjustment can positively impact overall health and wellness is best explained by an example.

Take blood pressure: a recent double blind, placebo controlled, randomized study showed specific upper cervical adjustments to the first vertebra of the spine (the C1 or “atlas”) decreased blood pressure an average of 14/8 mmHg. That is as good as double drug therapy.

What do we know? The people in the study had a vertebral fixation at C1. The atlas is located where the brain stem becomes the spinal cord, and where one of the body’s blood pressure regulating centers is located. Spinal misalignments can cause nerve interference and negatively affect the body’s ability to function. Correction of the spinal misalignment allows the body to function as it is designed, and to regulate blood pressure effectively.

    This is just one example.

When you think about the central nervous system, which is comprised of the brain and the spinal cord, together they innervate and coordinate all activity in the body. If a spinal misalignment is decreasing nerve conduction it can affect the body’s ability to functional optimally. That is how chiropractic affects overall health, wellness and performance.
